Do I need to deal with Chinese customs?

For any parcel heading outside of the EU, you’ll need to fill out a customs form. This tells the Customs Agents in the destination country about the contents of your package so they can process it correctly.

As with most consignments to international destinations, when you send a parcel to China from the UK, there are occasionally customs duties and import taxes that need to be paid.

While you can’t pay these charges with us, when you book your delivery with ipostparcels, we will provide you with all the correct forms you need to help your parcel through both UK and Chinese customs.

HM Revenue & Customs has more information on tax and customs considerations for China.

According to new China Customs regulations, phone number for the ultimate consignee is the mandatory requirement for all shipments coming into China. Invalid phone number, such as “0000”,”123456789”, “-“, is not acceptable for customs declaration. Fail to provide correct consignee phone number will lead to clearance delay.

What items can't I send to China?

There are many rules and regulations around sending a parcel to China, some of which are different from those you might expect or are used to sending to other countries. The Chinese authorities also change their laws regularly, so we advise you re-check the regulations each time you send a parcel. Visit the General Administration of Customs People’s Republic of China website to make sure your parcels are good to send.

China prohibits anything marked "Republic of China" or "Made in China," and can also confiscate materials that promote political opinions that the government does not agree with. Restricted items include firearms, perishable food, live animals, money, alcohol, tobacco and precious metals.

It’s down to you to make sure you’re not sending any prohibited or restricted items into China. Remember that prohibitions and restrictions vary from country to country and can sometimes apply to items which you may think are ordinary, so it’s vital to check that your parcel contents will be allowed into China. Failure to do some may result in additional charges or even the destruction of your parcel.

Some examples of items you can’t post to China include:

Restricted and Prohibited Goods

Food

Illegal and dangerous

Other

Milk powder and baby milk

Flammable fuels and liquids Wood, bamboo, rattan and cane

Meat, poultry and fish products

Drugs (prescription or illicit) Perfume

Dairy products

Weaponry Currency

Fruit and vegetables

Firearms Precious stones, metals and pearls

Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.

How to package parcels to China

We would recommend being vigilant with packaging for your parcel – remember, your items will take quite a long journey and will pass through several depots with automated sorting machines. Be sure to take extra effort to package your items well and use some internal cushioning material for your parcel. Take a look at our packaging advice here.

We’ll transport parcels up to 25kg in weight, 80x80x80cm max in size and we strongly recommend you use a strong outer box when sending your package and don’t overfill it, regardless of the dimensions of your parcel. If you’d like some further advice on packaging, take a look at our handy international packaging guide for tips to get everything there soundly.
