About Syria
|
|
Officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic, this country is located in Western Asia and bordered by Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea. With Damascus the capital city, it is amongst the oldest continuously-habited cities in the entire world!
This country is home to a variety of high mountains, deserts and fertile plains which attract the attention of many western tourists each year.
The climate is both dry and hot with even the winters noting mild temperatures and due to the country’s natural elevation. This means snow occurs very occasionally.
Most of the locals in Syria live in the Euphrates River valley and along the coastal plain; a fertile strip in between the coastal mountains and the dessert.
Syrians are Levantine people and are closely related to their immediate neighbours: Palestinians and Lebanese. However, the second largest ethnic group found in this country are the Kurds – making up 9% of the overall population – who traditionally live in the north eastern corner of Syria and speak Kurmanji.
The two most prominent religions found in Syria are Sunni Arabs and the Kurds however there are also 2.5 million Christians.
Football, basketball, swimming and tennis are extremely popular sports throughout the country, with Damascus being home to the fifth and seventh Pan Arab Games.
Many western tourists flock to Syria every year to take advantage of their rich and varied cuisine which is predominantly made up of Southern Mediterranean, Greek and Southwest Asian dishes.
