About Surinam
|
|
Surinam was once part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands after it was invaded by the Dutch in 1667. In 1975 the country gained independence and now has established trade and cultural relations with the Caribbean nations.
With a land mass of just over 165,000 sq kilometers, Surinam is the smallest of the sovereign states of South America. Though the Dutch speaking country supports a population of just over 575,000.
The country’s climate is a very hot and tropical one, without variation during the year. Humidity is usually at 80/90%.
The economy in Surinam was once supported by the Dutch, though the country is making advances in gold mining and oil has improved their independence from the Dutch. The export of both rice and bananas also adds to the country’s income. Ecotourism is also a growing revenue as the country has almost 80% of its land taken up by rain forest.
The major sport in Surinam is football. You may recall one famous son of Surinam being Ruud Gullit, who famously went on to play for The Netherlands.
