Do I need to deal with South African Customs?

For any parcel heading outside of the EU, you’ll need to fill out a customs form. This tells the Customs Agents in South Africa about the contents of your package so they can process it correctly. When you send a parcel to South Africa from the UK, there are sometimes additional customs duties and import taxes that need to be paid.

All shipments to South Africa should be accompanied by the following documentation; a statement of the contents of the package, insurance documents and the actual value of the involved product.

Important:- sending personal effects to South Africa requires a full inventory of contents and an expected 3-4 day delay at customs.

When you book your delivery with ipostparcels, we will provide you with all the correct forms you need to help your parcel through South African customs. Completing and providing these documents is down to the sender. If your parcel requires a permit these are issued by the South African Department of Trade. More detailed information is available via the South African Revenue Service website.

HM Revenue & Customs has more information on tax and customs considerations for South Africa.

How to package parcels to South Africa

As your parcel will be taking quite a long journey through several depots with automated sorting machines, be sure to make extra effort to package your items well and use internal packing material to cushion the inside of your parcel. Take a look at our packaging advice here

ipostparcels can transport parcels up to 25kg in weight and 80x80x80cm max in size – though we strongly recommend you use a strong outer box and don’t overfill it, regardless of the dimensions of your parcel. If you’d like further advice on packaging, take a look at our handy international packaging guide for tips to get everything there soundly.

How safe will my parcel be?

As long as you adhere to the restricted and prohibited items list and South African customs regulations, you don’t need to worry about your parcel when you send with ipostparcels. But to help with any concerns you have, our free online parcel tracking system will let you keep tabs on your parcel throughout its entire journey, from collection to delivery.

South Africa is the only country in the world to have two Nobel peace prize winners who lived in houses on the same street - Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu – which is pretty impressive from a population of around 52 million.
