About Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands have been inhabited for thousands of years and consist of many islands including the Shortland Islands, Santa Isabel and the Santa Cruz Islands.
The climate throughout the year is extremely humid although temperatures due cool from June-August. Many western tourists visit the Solomon Islands largely because it is untouched and unspoilt but you’ll find a scattering of traditional guesthouses and comfortable hideaways if you spend time exploring the local area.
The majority of Solomon Islanders are ethnically Melanesian, Polynesian and Micronesian while there are also a large number of Chinese locals. Despite English being the official language, a very small percentage of inhabitants actually speak it with Polynesian languages the most commonly heard.
The traditional culture found on the islands involves age-old customs that are handed down from one generation to the next and as there is a lack of television signals through the island, radio is their main modern influence.
This makes music really important to locals too and traditional compositions involve both group and solo artists. Sport is also a big part of life and the Solomon Islands National Rugby Union Team has been going strong on the island since 1969.
