Mongolia is a landlocked country and lies between Russia and China. The population of Mongolia lies at just under 3 million (2008 estimate). There are around 4 million ethnic Mongols living in Inner Mongolia but this is now part of China.
Ulaan Baatar is the capital of Mongolia and has a population of 1,029,900 (2008) people. It is also recorded as the coldest and windiest capital on the Earth.
Around 90% of inhabitants speak Mongolian as their first language and over 53% of the population follow the religion of Buddhism.
Mongolia is famous for the incredibly harsh climate. There is a wide range of different temperature variations depending on the season and very little rainfall throughout the year. Average temperatures in January are an astonishing -30 degrees and the winter is a very long season with summers coming around short yet hot.
Sport is a big tradition in Mongolia and on July 11th when the country celebrates its independence, there are many competitions to work out who is Mongolia’s number one wrestler. This is called Naadam and is a celebration of all traditional Mongolian sports including archery, horse racing and indeed wrestling.
