About Ivory Coast
|
|
The Ivory Coast or Cote d’Ivoire takes its name from the major trade that occurred along the particular stretch of coastline among Portuguese and French merchant-explorers in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Similar to the ‘Grain Coast’, ‘Gold Coast’ and ‘Slave Coast’, the Ivory Coast reflected the export of ivory in the region.
The former French colony achieved independence in 1960 and based much of its economy on the production of coffee and cocoa in the decades that followed. Located in western Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ivory Coast borders Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkino Faso and Ghana, as well as the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
Three main seasons are seen across the Ivory Coast, with warm and dry weather between November and March followed by very hot and dry weather from March till May. From June to October the weather is warm and wet, with temperatures relatively consistent all year around.
Fun fact: More than 70% of the Ivory Coast’s population relies on agriculture and tourism for their livelihoods.
