About Gabon
|
|
Gabon on the Atlantic coast of Africa is bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. Its capital Libraville translates as Free Town and was founded by freed slaves in 1849. The country meanwhile gained its independence from France in 1960.
Much of the country is lush rainforest and is abundant petroleum sources and high levels of foreign private investment make it one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most prosperous countries. Nearly 800 species of birds can be found in the forests while some areas of savannah, grasslands and low lying coastal regions are also home to hundreds of species of plants, trees and other flora.
Species of elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas and other large mammals can also be found in abundance.
Agriculture includes coffee, sugar and palm oil production while some uranium is also exported. The climate is hot and humid due to Gabon’s position on the equator with the wettest months being May and June.
