About Eritrea
|
|
Located in the horn of Africa, Eritrea is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti and has a sizable length of coastline meeting the Red Sea. Its name is based on the Greek name for this sea which was first adapted for Italian Eritrea back in 1890. Eritrean independence from Ethiopia, from which it was once joined as the Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea, came following conflict in 1993.
A branch of the East African Rift bisects the country which means the country is covered with a range of geographical features. More fertile lands can be found to the west while desert is found in the east.
The Dahlak Archipelago of islands are world renowned for their pearl production and are largely uninhabited. The entire coastline of Eritrea is also a reserve, making it the first country where this was the case.
Eritrea is home to extensive mineral resources, including copper, gold, granite and marble, and has strong export markets are a result.
