About Chile

|
Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Chile is today one of South America's most stable and affluent nations. It leads Latin American nations in standings of human development, state of peace, economic freedom, and low perception of corruption.
Chile has been in the new in recent years, and gained global recognition for the successful rescue of 33 trapped miners in 2010. All 33 men were brought to the surface on 13 October 2010 over a period of almost 24 hours, an effort that was carried on live television around the world.
Due to Chile's topography a functioning transport network is vital to its economy with roads and highways playing key parts in this. Small domestic flights are also often used due to the country's geography and long distances between major cities.
Chile has a total of 372 runways, however only 62 are these are paved and suitable for long haul aircraft. Important airports in Chile include Chacalluta International Airport (Arica), Diego Aracena International Airport (Iquique), Cerro Moreno International Airport (Antofagasta), and the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (Santiago) with traffic of 12,105,524 passengers in 2011. With the high level of passengers and need for air transport it is safe to assume that these airports provide all the necessary infrastructure to allow for efficient cargo handling.
