About Brunei
|
|
Brunei was a sovereign state until it gained independence from Britain in 1984. The country’s economy has flourished since, transforming Brunei into an industrialised state. Much of its wealth has been made through their petrol and gas fields making them the fifth richest nation of some 182.
The name Brunei is said to come from the story of the discovery of the country, by Sultan Mohammed Shah, who upon landing after a journey through the Brunei river estuary exclaimed ‘Baru-Nah’ which is said to translate as ‘This is It!’.
The country is divided into four districts and some 38 sub districts. Brunei Maura has the largest population of the districts with in excess of 280,000 inhabitants across an area of 571sq km.
Over 90% of the country’s population lives in just 15 of the 38 sub districts. A total of 161km borders the South China Sea and shares 381km of its border with Malaysia.
