About British Virgin Islands
|
|
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are located in the Caribbean, just east of Puerto Rico, and make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago.
Made up of six islands –which are largely volcanic in origin – each has a hilly, rugged terrain which distinguishes the BVI from other islands in the Caribbean.
While the BVI are part of Her Majesty’s land, aside from scattered offerings of fish and chips, there is little else that’s overly British to be found there. Instead, with its trade winds, calm currents and gorgeous bays, BVI is one of the world’s top sailing hotspots.
A collection of sky high boulders mark the national park of BVI and the volcanic rocks – which are 70 million years old – from a number of grottoes that flood with sea water to provide unique swimming and snorkelling experiences.
The two pillars of the economy in the BVI are tourism and financial services; making this island one of the most prosperous economies in the Caribbean region.
The traditional music of the BVI is called Fungi – named after the local cornmeal dish – which comprises of a special sound that is unique to the fusion between African and European music.
In fact, it functions as a medium of local history and folklore and is therefore considered a cultural form of expression and has even made its way into the school curriculum.
The BVI has long been a haven for experienced sailors and sailing enthusiasts, which is the reason behind the island hosting a number of sailing events during the year including the week-long Spring Regatta.
