The Bahamas is made up of 700 islands across over 100,000 square miles of ocean located in the North Atlantic.

The islands became the free and sovereign Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 1973, ending 325 years of British rule. However, The Bahamas do remain part of the Commonwealth.
The Bahamas has a tropical climate. In winter, it is largely influenced by the warm Gulf Stream. In summer and autumn the islands can then be affected by hurricanes.
Sailing is the national sport of The Bahamas but Cricket is perhaps the most popular sport on the islands and has been played since as far back as 1846.
