Do I need to deal with French customs?
It’s up to you to ensure your parcel’s contents are allowed into France – if you fail to do so, it may result in extra charges, the parcel being returned to you or possibly being destroyed. Avoid this by making sure you don’t send anything on the restricted or prohibited list. You should also take care to package the parcel carefully.
Sending personal effects to France? A full detailed itemised invoice clearly marked as “personal effects” with item values is required. If the Customs officer considers the contents are for personal use and not new, no duties or tax will be charged.
If all this sounds like hard work, don’t worry, we’ll help automatically generate any documents for you from the information you provide on the booking form.
For more information please see the France Diplomatie website.
HM Revenue & Customs has more information on tax and customs considerations for France.
What items can’t I send to France?
As with all deliveries outside the UK, please ensure that your parcel contents are allowed into the destination country. France has a few items that are restricted for import which include things such as rubber erasers, pyjamas or nightdresses made from artificial fibres, silicone for plastic surgery, toys and games which contain copper sulphate, Viagra and vitamins.
You can visit the French Customs website and the French post office website, although they are both in French, a web browser such as Chrome should be able to translate this for you.
Some examples of items you can’t post include:
Restricted and Prohibited Goods
|
Food
|
Illegal and dangerous
|
Other
|
Perishables
|
Drugs
|
Counterfeit items
|
Meat, fish
|
Explosives
|
protected animals and plants
|
Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
How to package parcels to France
Although France isn’t very far from the UK, we still advise you take good care with packaging; your parcel will travel through a number of depots with automated sorting machines so be sure to pack your items well and use cushioning material inside your parcel to help protect the contents from damage.
We’ll transport parcels up to 25kg in weight, 80x80x80cm max in size. We always recommend you use a strong and sturdy outer box when sending your package and don’t overfill it, regardless of the dimensions of your parcel. For further advice, take a look at our handy international packaging guide for tips.
How safe will my parcel be?
We pride ourselves on the courier services we offer, from booking and collection through to delivery and wouldn’t want you to worry about your package arriving safely - it’s in good hands. In fact, you will have complete visibility of your parcel on its journey, for free, as standard using our online tracking service.
As well as this, we provide free £50 extended cover on your items, with the option to upgrade to extra cover for more valuable items, should you wish to do so.

Did you know?
France is the most visited country in the world – the Louvre being the most visited museum anywhere. And while we associate the French with food, their love of it extends beyond the taste - France was the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food. Bon Appétit!
