Stamps come in all shapes and sizes and it seems there really are designs to mark any occasion.

From film releases to sporting glory, many of the world’s events have features on small pieces of paper with a perforated edge and adhesive on the back.

Some stamps stand out more than others, maybe due to the strangeness of their design or merely due to the event or person they commemorate.

Collectors get themselves into a frenzy hunting for them and others just want to ensure their packages and parcels reach their destination.

There’s no escaping stamps in the postage system and it’s why we’ve picked out five of the best – one in particular serves as a startling reminder to days gone by.

1. A piece of history at the London 2012

Olympic euphoria gripped the nation in 2012 and the postal system did not escape the madness.

A set of specially designed stamps showcased some of the main events at the games, but tied them in rather impressively to some of London’s magnificent buildings.

Tower Bridge and the London Eye showcased fencing and cycling respectively, with the latter proving incredibly popular after cyclist after cyclist scooped gold at the Games.

2. It’s a writer’s paradise

There are always characters from books, myths and legends that we grow to love, so it’s only right that they should be celebrated in stamp form.

From Arthurian legend to the lands of Narnia and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this unique set of stamps celebrates some of the most loveable and hateable characters from the world of literature.

Cast a spell over your parcel and lace it in mystery with this set of stamps that’s ideal for kids birthday cards and literature lovers.

3. A little bit of rock and roll

Definitely one of, and arguably, THE best guitarist of all time, the life and times of Jimi Hendrix are perfectly summed up in this splendid creation.

In only four years on the big stage he transformed popular music with a spectacular set of instrumentals and it is unsurprising that he was recognised by the USA for his contributions to music.

Strike a chord with the recipient and pay homage to a true music great.

4. Ashes to ashes, post to post

England cricket’s Ashes winning summer brought together a nation in celebration, thanks in part to the exploits of a certain Andrew Flintoff (above right).

Freddie was the scorn of the Australian side in what has since been described as the “Greatest Test Series”.

His antics in the following celebrations were equally as impressive, taking front page headlines both across Britain and the rest of the world.

England’s victory brought nearly 20 years of cricketing Ashes woe to an end and the sense of euphoria did not go unnoticed by Royal Mail.

Similarly, they showcased England’s Rugby World Cup victory in the same vein several years previously.

5. A somber reminder of history

Remembering the lessons of the past is an almost permanent feature of speeches made by politicians. This is because it is important to learn from such lessons and avoid making the same mistakes.

the Royal Mail is commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War 1 with 6 specially commissioned stamps.
