The onset of autumn is often considered to be a depressing time of year – the nights are drawing in and the warmth of summer slowly drifts away.
But as the trees start to lose their leaves and people begin to wrap up warm, there are still plenty of reasons to remain cheerful.
Not least since autumn brings with it some exceptional scenery, not just in the UK, but from all over the globe.
As many of these stunning pictures show, the brown and red leaves help to create stunning backdrops and tranquil scenes – many of which could easily be mistaken for film backdrops!
We’ll start off in Switzerland with the Alps providing a truly striking autumn setting. With snows found on the highest peaks and with plenty of woodland away from the main ski slopes, the mountainsides are awash with incredible colours.

Or take the incredible route along this road in Pennsylvania, with red and orange trees providing plenty for drivers to see.

And then there’s the Scottish Highlands which really come alive in the autumn when the trees and heather starts to brown. What’s left is a mix of colours that wouldn’t go amiss on the paint palette of Monet or Van Gogh.

Add a little wildlife to the autumn scenery and it becomes even more spectacular, as this scene from Wyoming shows. These idyllic surroundings provide the perfect place for relaxation, or as the ideal place from which to let your imagination run wild.

It’s safe to say that the autumn provides a number of scenes that are not found at any time of year. While the spring may provide an abundance of greenery, a similar wealth of reds and browns in autumn provides a setting that is equally as beautiful – as this shot from the Appalachian Mountains shows.

Japan also benefits from highly a highly colourful autumn season, as a number of plants change shade to reflect the altering seasons. Just as cherry blossom trees transform the country in the spring, others have a similar influence in the autumn, creating field upon field of lush vegetation.

The rich history of Japan blends in seamlessly with the surroundings too, as many of the traditional buildings often incorporate shades of red and brown, as seen in Kyoto below. These spectacular scenes provide a wonderful place to escape too, and a far cry from city life.

Autumn in the UK can be equally as beautiful as there is usually plenty of colour to liven up even the darkest days. There’s something about wildlife under the autumn mist that is very intriguing too.
