Starting university can be quite a daunting thought, but any anxiety often quickly disappears once the events of Freshers’ Week are in full swing.
It’s often a whole new experience for many fresh faced youngsters – many are moving away from home for the first time, getting ready to cook for themselves and wash their own clothes for the first time!
Freshers’ Week marks the start of a new chapter in life where everyone settles in, enrols on their courses, and finalises timetables and the like.
Beyond that, it’s about having a really good time meeting new faces and socialising.

If you’re considering joining some societies at the bun fight you may as well join any that take your fancy – that way you’ll find out all about them and be able to decide if they’re for you.
You can always be taken off mailing lists if you decide you don’t like paintballing or ultimate Frisbee for example!
There really is no better time than during Freshers’ Week to try out new things.
Be prepared to spend
Candis
Freshers’ Week is often one of the most expensive of your time at university but don’t be scared to spend. It’s far better to have a few nights off when there’s not much going on in November than it is to miss out on the activities at the start.
Obviously there isn’t a need to completely break the bank (those 50p pints will likely be around all year, not just for Freshers’ Week) but setting some extra money aside is definitely advantageous.
But don’t spend all of your loan in the first week!
Don’t forget to collect all your documents
Imperial
Student IDs and passes are a necessity on campus so make sure you don’t forget to collect yours. While tours of the campus may also be quite boring, the information that can be learned can make life a whole lot easier in the long run too – definitely worth crawling out of bed with a hangover for!
Be prepared to explore
Neurobusiness
Most students are starting life in a new city and that means there is plenty to discover – from landmarks to supermarkets, pubs and the nearest kebab house!
Don’t be afraid to ask
Under30ceo
Nearly everyone else is in exactly the same boat as you during Freshers’ Week so expect to be asking lots of questions about things you feel you should know. There’s no shame in asking about if you don’t know something.
Learn to love Iceland/Lidl/ Aldi/ the bargain corner store
Campusmediagroup
Living at university is often done on a budget and one of the vital things in life is food! Thanks to bargain shops it’s often possible to get good quality food, even when trying to operate with little money!
Shop around and see what you can find – although the three stores above all come highly recommended!
Just enjoy yourself
University is predominantly for studying, but for a brief time at the start it is not the focus. That time is during Freshers’ Week when new students are allowed to let their hair down and have fun, without having to worry about assignments and work the next day.
That comes later on in your studies…
